This beautiful Italian Walnut Burl Cassone is very heavy and its dimensions are as follows:
Width: 160 cm, Depth: 56 cm, Height: 68 cm.

This particular Cassone is a great example dating back to the early 1800s and was recently acquired from a stately home.
Cassones were traditionally given as a dowry for a wedding and were used to store clothes and linen. The Renaissance period was the time when Cassones became very popular, but they were still being made until the 19th century. Nowadays, they are often passed down through generations as they are not only practical but also considered to be works of art. This specific Cassone is a great example of craftsmanship, with its original hinges and lock and key still in working condition - which is quite rare considering its age. It is beautifully hand-carved from walnut and features an armorial-style carved panel at the front, flanked by caryatid figures. The sides and frontage show the beautiful grain of the walnut and the exceptional quality cassone stands proud on scroll acanthus-carved feet.
