Here we have a beautiful, richly carved oak coffer (marriage chest) dated 1670 and bearing the initials "R P", originating from the West Country of England, most likely Somerset.

This exceptional example of Restoration-period craftsmanship features deep, crisply executed carving throughout. The front is divided into three fielded panels, each centred with a bold raised lozenge surrounded by flowing foliate scrollwork. The upper frieze is adorned with an intricate vine and grape motif, symbolising prosperity and abundance- a decorative feature typical of Somerset Devon joinery of the late 17th century.

At the centre, a rectangular inlaid panel is inscribed 'R P 1670', flanked by stylised urn motifs that likely denote the initials of the original owner or a marriage commemoration.

Inside the chest is a candle box, traditionally used to store candles, keys, coins, and later valuables. The feature is typical of a genuine 17th-century piece and confirms the authenticity of its early joinery. What makes this example particularly special is the later Georgian enhancement to its lid- beautifully mounted with decorative brass corner fittings in a radiating fan pattern, and finished with a diamond-shaped bone inlaid escutcheon surrounding the keyhole. These details were likely from the 18th century, a time when collectors and country house owners often embellished treasured heirlooms with fashionable fittings to reflect Georgian taste.

Constructed in solid English oak, the chest displays all the hallmarks of the traditional 17th-century joinery, including mortise and tenon joints secured with pegs. The patina is exceptional - a rich, warm tone developed over more than 350 years of careful use and waxing.

The chest has lovely proportions; it is quite narrow in depth, yet long, making it ideal for a hallway.

Condition: A heavy and structurally solid oak chest. Minor age-related shrinkage and wear, consistent with its great age, only enhance its authenticity and charm.
