Here we have a substantial Welsh Gothic Revival carved oak settle, crafted by a provincial workshop, dating back to around 1870.

The beautiful, high-panelled back is richly carved with three relief panels depicting heraldic and mythological beasts —a griffin in the centre, flanked by unicorn/horse head motifs within foliate and vine scroll borders.

The carved leaf-scroll armrests rest on twist-turned front posts above a deeply carved seat front. The hinged seats open to a three-bay storage compartment, retaining its original brass butt hinges.

Constructed throughout in solid Welsh Oak with pegged frame joints and a fine warm patina.

The carving vocabulary and robust proportions closely correspond to the late 19th-century Welsh provincial joinery traditions of Carmarthenshire and North Wales, blending Tudor and Gothic Revival influences.

Condition: Structurally solid and sound Welsh oak settle, expected surface wear, and minor age splits.

Interior boards with honest oxidisation and old tool marks.

Two metal brass plates have been put underneath one of the seat plank lids - see pictures.

There are signs of historic woodworm activity but it is not active and now extinct.
