Heavily Hand Carved Jacobean Folk Art Cupboard <br> <br> Dimensions: Height-183 cm x Width 118 cm x Depth 38 cm<br> <br> Date: 1680 C<br> <br> Rare 17th-century hand-carved oak cabinet, dating to circa 1680 C, possibly earlier. Crafted from thick, solid oak boards, entirely hand-built with visible hand-scraped surfaces and traditional pre-industrial construction. The very old cupboard is bursting with history and has an abundance of storage; two cupboards with a shelf, with two drawers below, and a larger cupboard area below, retaining its original shelfing<br> <br> The cabinet is intricately decorated with deep folk-art carving, including floral rosettes, scrolling motifs, carved chip edging, and narrative figural panels, all typical of 17th-century carvings. One panel depicts villagers with the devil drinking and celebrating, while the opposing panel shows the villagers reacting in fear and trying to flee from the devil - an evocative moralising folk scene typical of late 17th-century Central European craftsmanship.<br> <br> The interior boards are thick, plain, and utilitarian, consistent with furniture of this period, and the piece retains a deep, original patina developed over centuries. <br> <br> A historical and important antique cupboard piece, a rare example of early European folk furniture with symbolic narrative carvings that tell a very interesting story.<br> <br> Condition: There are historical repairs and later replacements; the backboard has been replaced as well as some of the interior elements and/or hardware, entirely typical for a cabinet of this age.
