Elaborately Carved Oak Davenport Writing Desk, Late Victorian , Desks & Bureaus ,
An impressively ornate antique oak Davenport writing desk, circa 1890, with richly carved scrolled, geometric and foliate decoration throughout. Its compact proportions conceal an ingenious arrangement of writing and storage features, making it a distinctive statement piece for a study, library or characterful interior.

The upper section slides forward on the base and incorporates a raised turned-spindle gallery above a hinged, sloping writing surface. Lifting the writing slope reveals two small drawers above two dummy drawer fronts. The front frieze bears the carved inscription “1688”, framed by decorative motifs.

To the right-hand side, a pull-out hinged pen drawer provides additional stationery storage. Beneath it, a carved cupboard door opens to reveal four drawers fitted with campaign-style handles. Bold barley-twist columns, carved panels and a richly decorated plinth complete this unusually elaborate design.

The oak displays warm colour, contrasting darker details and extensive surface character. Three keys accompany the desk; their operation has not been confirmed.

Condition
Offered in unrestored antique condition with historical marks, scuffs, scratches, stains, discolouration and other wear from age and use. The hinged writing surface is slightly warped, the rear right leg is loose and the side cupboard door is cracked. Most handles are reported to be ivory. Please examine the photographs carefully.
