Antique Victorian Pine Chest of Drawers c.1840<br> <br> Dimensions: Height 87 cm / Width 94 . 5 cm / Depth 44 cm<br> <br> Provenance: England<br> <br> Material: Antique Pine<br> <br> Date: 1840<br> <br> A wonderfully characterful early Victorian pine chest of drawers, circa 1840, with a beautifully timeworn appearance and an abundance of authentic rustic charm.<br> <br> <br> Constructed in solid pine in the traditional two-short-over-three-long drawer configuration, the chest displays many features associated with early 19th-century cabinetmaking, including hand-cut dovetailed drawers, substantial plank construction and old hand-forged nails.<br> <br> <br> The chest has acquired a fabulous pale, naturally aged surface with wonderful variations in colour, old knots, marks, shrinkage, knocks and imperfections accumulated during approximately 180 years of use. Of particular note is the dramatic natural knot and textured figuring across one of the long drawer fronts, giving the piece a wonderfully individual appearance.<br> <br> <br> The drawers retain their original keyholes and are now fitted with simple turned wooden knobs, which appear to be later replacements and suit the understated country character beautifully.<br> <br> <br> The wide pine boards to the back, simple plinth base and honest construction are particularly appealing, giving the chest the relaxed appearance associated with early English country and provincial furniture.<br> <br> <br> This is not a highly restored piece – its appeal lies very much in its age, texture and wonderfully worn surface. Every mark and imperfection forms part of its history and gives it the decorative quality so sought after in antique country-house interiors.<br> <br> <br> A highly usable antique offering generous storage, equally at home in a country cottage, period property or contemporary interior where its warm, rustic character can take centre stage.<br> <br> <br> <br> Condition: Good antique condition commensurate with considerable age. Numerous historic marks, knocks, wear, splits, losses, old repairs and natural imperfections throughout. Later replacement wooden knobs.
