This beautiful English George lV, Rosewood Davenport Desk, dates back to 1825, attributed to Gillows of Lancaster & London. The rare desk has a sloped, tooled brown leather top that slides forward to accommodate the knees. The leather top also opens up to reveal a well-fitted edar of Lebanon and mahogany drawer interior, which boasts a stunning original intricate brass gallery above. There are two pull-out slides providing extra space to write and a wonderful pull-out pen and ink compartment. Along the same side, there is a bank of four dovetailed drawers, very convenient for paper and stationery.

On the opposite left-hand side, there is a bank of dummy drawers, with the front and back being paneled. This exceptional desk terminates upon bun feet with its original recessed castor feet. The stunning davenport still retains all its original working key and locks, which is rare to come across for its time.

The fine quality Rosewood desk boasts the most beautiful patina and grain, and would make an excellent investment and a useful statement piece in any room

History of the Davenport Desk: This desk owes its name to a Captain Davenport who was the first to commission the design, from Gillows of Lancaster, near the end of the 18th century. In a sense, then, it could also be considered a Campaign desk, though there are no records indicating if Captain Davenport was in the British Army or the Royal Navy. The design was ingenious and practical because it consumed so little space in an officers’ cabin on a ship.

Condition: Structurally solid and in excellent condition for its time. Old historical marks here and there give this piece its original authenticity and abundance of character and charm. The desk has been well looked after throughout its time. Cleaned and polished, ready for intentional use.
