Antique Oak Flemish Court Cupboard
Height 174 cm x Depth 49 cm x Width 118 cm
This beautiful antique oak Flemish cupboard dates back to the late 1800s, with a profusely hand-carved front with a rectangular paneled molded top upon a pair of flanking figural men with lion's masks clasping iron bull rings above, guarding intricately carved cupboard doors revealing great storage space and shelving. The antique cupboard comes away in two sections; the top comes away from the base part for easy transportation. The lower cupboard section is as equally ornate with an abundance of intricate guilloche borders and arcading carvings along with flanking Lion's masks guarding the cupboards revealing larger storage space with further shelving inside.
The cupboard evolved into a court cupboard inspired by an earlier French design, it was an important piece of furniture between 1550 and 1675, used to display plates and other eating and drinking vessels. The name 'court cupboard' derives from court the word for 'short' in French, perhaps meaning that the cupboard was short in stature.
This Flemish Court cupboard has been cleaned and polished and is ready for intended use, this cupboard is a statement piece full of character and charm and look very grand in any room.
Condition: Excellent condition for its age, structurally sound and solid. With any antique dating back to the 1800's there are evidence of wear and tear, and cosmetic scratches but nothing major to note.
