Outstanding Quality Antique Walnut Burr Davenport Desk Circa 1840

H 87 cm x W 79 cm x Depth 60 cm

Part of the Historical Province: Purchased at the Ashtead Park Auction 1924

This outstanding quality antique walnut burr Davenport desk dates back to 1840 and is a real statement piece. It is a larger size than most davenports and surpasses the traditional antique davenport with its size and exceptional quality.

This fine davenport has sloping, tooled, moulded green leather top revealing a superior French-polished fitted interior. The side has a small pull-out hinged drawer (for holding pens) which can be turned to the side for ease of accessibility when writing. There is a unsual paneled door concealing four working dovetail drawers (pull out drawers) on both sides, 8 drawers in total banking the sides, which is unusual for a traditional davenport as your typical davenport has a bank of dummy drawers but with this Davenport desk being larger than most, it can accommodate drawers on either sides, making the desk ideal if you need that extra storage, but not taking up too much space at the same time.

The davenport is set on beautiful spiral turned frontal supports, on a concave base, making space to sit at, and terminating on its original castors that are working and still intact.

This wonderful davenport has a stunning walnut burr with a beautiful patina, and intricate inlaid maquetry centre panel to the front

This antique Davenport would look superb in a variety of rooms from the bedroom, living room or office. This item would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is an extremely functional item. This is a truly excellent piece with quality design and construction throughout. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.

History of the Davenport Desk:
This desk owes its name to a Captain Davenport who was the first to commission the design, from Gillows of Lancaster, near the end of the 18th century. In a sense, then, it could also be considered a Campaign desk, though there are no records indicating if Captain Davenport was in the British Army or the Royal Navy. The design was ingenious and practical because it consumed so little space in an officers’ cabin on a ship. This antique Davenport would look superb in a variety of rooms from the bedroom, living room or office.
