Georgian Oak Mule Chest / Coffer – Late 18th Century

Dimensions: Width 123 cm x Depth 54 cm x Height 69 cm

Provenance: England

Date: 1780

A handsome and original Georgian oak mule chest dating from the late 18th century, featuring a beautifully figured solid oak front with four fielded panels, an original iron lock escutcheon with the initials carved TS, the initials usually denote the bride and groom, possibly given to them as a wedding gift, which is also known as a marriage chest.

The heavy oak plank top lifts to reveal a generous amount of space, which was originally used to store blankets and bedding. There are also two useful drawers beneath; the bottom drawers were specifically intended to store house slippers, which were called "mules" in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Richly patinated with warm honey-brown tones and plenty of character acquired over centuries of use.

A versatile piece, ideal for use as a blanket chest, storage coffer, window seat, or statement hallway piece.

Condition: Good antique condition with age-related wear, marks, and patina consistent with its age. There have been historical repairs made throughout its time. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
